The inventor of the Fisher Space Pen didn't set out to create a pen specifically for astronauts -- Paul C. Fisher just wanted to create a really, really great pen. When, after years of research and testing, he ended up with what he felt was a perfect pen, it just so happened its special attributes -- no reliance on gravity, ink that wasn't exposed to air, ability to write underwater and at extreme hot/cold temperatures -- made it ideal for use in outer space. NASA agreed, and sent Fisher's pen into space with the astronauts of the Apollo 7 spacecraft.
