This is the Fisher Explorer Space Pen. Small and tough, pull it out of your rucksack, pull the cap off and put it on the end of the pen and you have a full size pen with a comfortable rubber grip.
Due to the pressurised refill it writes anywhere including upside down, and on anything including wet paper.
In the 1960's Paul Fisher invented the pressurised ballpoint refill. These refills are the most reliable, longest lasting and densest colour ballpoint refills made. Why? Firstly, because they are completely sealed, unlike conventional refills which have a small vent to allow them to operate, but lets them dry out over time. Space pen refills remain unchanged for years. Secondly, because the ink in the Spacepen is a wax, not a paste. There is a small ball in the nib which rotates and melts the ink through friction giving a clean, dense line. And thirdly, because they don't dry out they last the longest of any refills.
